Fatal afternoon shooting on West Beaver Street

Police are investigating a fatal shooting on West Beaver Street just west of the Interstate 95 overpass.
A man standing on the sidewalk on the north side of West Beaver was shot by a second man shortly after 1 p.m., a witness told police. The victim, who was described as in his early 20s, was taken to Shands Jacksonville, where he died, said homicide Sgt. Shawn Coarsey.
No weapon was found and no arrests have been made, Coarsey said. He said the woman who saw the shooting as she was driving by initially kept going then returned after calling police. Coarsey said she did not see where the assailant went.
He said other motorists were on the road at the time of the shooting and asked that any other witnesses call police. The Sheriff’s Office can be reached at (904) 630-0500.
