Putnam lieutenant reinstated after demotion appeal
Nov 19, 2008
A lieutenant with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office who had been demoted during a probe of steroid use has had her rank restored, authorities said.
Lt. Teresa Odom, a 20-year veteran of the force, was demoted to sergeant in October after an investigation showed she had purchased prescription thyroid medication from another officer. Wednesday, Sheriff Dean Kelly rescinded the demotion after a review of an appeal.
Odom, who will be suspended seven days and receive a letter of reprimand, was demoted after an internal investigation that another member of the agency was using steroids. Investigators found Odom purchased a prescription thyroid medicine from detective William Prioletti but the appeal convinced Kelly that she was not aware it was a prescription drug, said Maj. Keith Riddick.
Riddick said Odom was still punished because as a lieutenant she should have known what she was doing was improper. Prioletti resigned from the department and a third officer was suspended, lost pay, was placed on probation and reprimanded in a letter.
